Shoen Uemura

Shoen Uemura (1875–1949) was a renowned Japanese painter active from the Meiji to the Showa period and a leading master of bijinga (paintings of beautiful women). Born in Kyoto, she built upon the foundation of the Shijo school to consistently depict pure, elegant, and refined female figures. Her representative works, such as Noh Dance Prelude (Jo-no-Mai) and Mother and Child (Boshi), delicately capture the inner mind and emotions of women. Establishing a firm position in a male-dominated art world, she became the first woman to be awarded the Order of Culture in 1948. Her artistic style, embodying truth, goodness, and beauty, continues to captivate many people today.

Mother and Child (Boshi)

Mother and Child (Boshi) by Shoen Uemura was painted in 1934 following the loss of her beloved mother. The artwork expresses deep maternal affection through a Meiji-period Kyoto woman tenderly cradling her young child. Featuring soft, bright colors, refined lines, and intricate depictions of the kimono and reed screen, it showcases Shoen’s signature dignified style of bijinga (paintings of beautiful women). The mother’s gentleness and reassuring presence, as well as the child’s innocent posture, are portrayed with pristine purity. Today, it is housed in The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
