About Hagoita Decorations

Hagoita are traditional Japanese New Year decorations displayed to celebrate good fortune and to invite health and happiness into the home. Originally used as a talisman to ward off misfortune, they have evolved into beautifully crafted ornaments that brighten the New Year season. Today, Hagoita come in a wide range of styles—classic oshie paddle dolls, floral designs made with tsumami fabric craft, frame-style displays, free-standing ornaments, and modern wall-mounted styles. Each brings a touch of elegance and seasonal charm to interior spaces. For a more detailed cultural explanation, please visit our guide: “What Are Hagoita Decorations?”

Types of Hagoita

Oshie Hagoita

Made by layering fabrics to create three-dimensional raised designs, oshie Hagoita represent the most traditional form. They often portray graceful female figures and carry a distinct, timeless beauty.

Floral & Tsumami-Craft Hagoita

These pieces feature small folded fabrics arranged like flowers, traditional tsumami zaiku techniques, or removable chirimen hair ornaments. Simple mizuhiki accents and soft colors give them a modern, decorative charm.

Frame-Style (Case) Hagoita

Displayed inside a protective case, this type keeps the decoration clean and easy to maintain. It suits homes that prefer a neat, dust-free display.

Free-Standing & Stand-Display Hagoita

Displayed without a case, these styles highlight the beauty of the paddle itself. Lightweight and compact, they are ideal for flexible placement around the home.

Wall-Mounted Hagoita

Slim and space-saving, wall-mounted designs are perfect for modern interiors where shelf or floor space is limited.

How to Choose a Hagoita

Choosing by Size

Small (around 7-sun): Easy to place on shelves or compact spaces Medium (around 10-sun): A balanced size that works well in most interiors Large (12–15-sun): Impressive presence suited for formal or decorative displays

Choosing by Display Location

Small sizes suit bookshelves or tabletops, while wall-mounted types are ideal when surface space is limited. Larger pieces can create a strong visual accent in entrance areas or living rooms.

Choosing Between Case or No Case

With case: Clean, easy to care for, and ideal for maintaining the condition of the decoration Without case: Artistic, lightweight, and flexible—easy to place almost anywhere in the home

Floral vs. Oshie Styles

Floral Hagoita may include removable hair accessories or feature delicate tsumami craftsmanship, giving them a soft, decorative look. Oshie Hagoita come with either graceful modern expressions or the classic long-eyed beauty style, each crafted with meticulous detail by skilled artisans.
