This tier features the five musicians known as Gonin-Bayashi.
Gonin-Bayashi (Five Musicians)
Gonin-Bayashi refers to a group of five male musicians. From right to left, the first doll is a singer holding a folding fan, while the others hold traditional Japanese instruments.
These are the caps worn by the musicians.
The instruments held by Gonin-Bayashi, from left to right:
- Taiko – a large floor drum
- Ookawa – a medium hand drum
- Kokawa – a small hand drum
- Fue – a Japanese flute
- Sensu – a folding fan, held by the singer
They may also be equipped with black-and-white sticks resembling short swords (wakizashi).
