Japanese Doll Cases: Types, Materials and Size Guide

Juho Tougei offers display cases designed for Japanese seasonal decorations, dolls, and spatial presentation, including use in retail and interior settings.
A display case is not only for protecting delicate items from dust and damage, but also an essential element that enhances the overall presentation and visual balance of the display.
We provide a range of cases suitable for various items, including Hina dolls, Gogatsu displays, and Hagoita, allowing you to choose according to your display needs.
This page introduces the main types of display cases, their characteristics, and key points for selection. It is recommended for those who would like to understand the differences before viewing the product listings.
The Role of a Doll Case
A doll case serves several important functions:
- Protecting displays from dust and dirt
- Creating a clean and well-organized presentation
- Making displays easier to arrange within limited space
- Helping preserve delicate dolls and accessories
Unlike display stands or folding screens, a case not only protects the items but also enhances the overall composition, giving the display a more complete and refined appearance.
Case Materials
Acrylic Cases
Acrylic cases are lightweight, durable, and less prone to breakage. They are easy to handle and convenient for moving or storage, making them suitable for households with children or pets.
However, acrylic tends to attract dust due to static electricity and may develop fine scratches if wiped dry. Gentle care is recommended when cleaning. For those prioritizing ease of use, acrylic is a practical choice.
Glass Cases
Glass cases offer excellent clarity and allow the display to appear more refined and elegant. They are more resistant to scratches and can maintain a clean appearance over time.
On the other hand, glass is heavier than acrylic and requires careful handling when moving. For those who value visual quality and a more traditional feel, glass cases are often preferred.
Case Shapes
Rectangular Cases
The most standard and versatile shape. Suitable for a wide variety of displays, including Hina dolls, Gogatsu displays, Hagoita, and Hamayumi. With many size options available, this type is a reliable starting point.
Hexagonal and Multi-Sided Cases
These shapes create a softer and more decorative impression. They add visual interest and are suitable for those who wish to highlight the design of the case itself.
Round and Semi-Circular Cases
These cases create a gentle and modern atmosphere. They are often chosen for compact displays or when blending smoothly into interior spaces.
Case Structure
In addition to shape, the structure of a case significantly affects its usability. It is important to choose based on how and where the case will be placed.
Top-Cover (Kabuse) Type
This type is placed over the display from above, covering the entire setup. It creates a clean and simple appearance.
However, space is required to lift the case when setting or removing items, and the entire case must be removed for adjustments.
Door-Type Cases
These cases feature doors on the front or side, allowing access without moving the entire case. This makes handling and adjustments easier after installation.
While space is needed to open the doors, this type is especially convenient for larger cases or fixed display locations.
Understanding Size and Proportions
When selecting a case for Hina dolls, Gogatsu displays, or similar items, it is important to consider not only the dolls themselves, but the entire arrangement—including stands, screens, accessories, lanterns, and decorative elements.
Including all elements often results in a larger case, so it is important to check the available display space in advance. In some cases, simplifying the arrangement by reducing certain elements can help achieve a more balanced and practical display.
Additionally, the internal usable space may be smaller than the external dimensions due to frame thickness and base structure. When selecting an empty case, it is recommended to allow some extra margin in size.
Key Points When Choosing a Case
Consider the total dimensions of the entire display, including stands and accessories.
Trying to include everything may result in an oversized case that is difficult to place.
Adjusting and simplifying the arrangement can help achieve a balanced display within a practical size.

Consultation on Combinations and Case Selection
Doll cases are not fixed to specific display types. The overall appearance and required size can vary greatly depending on the combination.
Rather than trying to include everything, adjusting the composition allows for a more balanced display suited to your available space.
At our store, we mainly offer empty cases and provide guidance on selecting a suitable case to match your existing display.
Depending on the case type, you can also view examples of actual arrangements using the same case.
If you are unsure about size or combinations, please feel free to contact us.

Why We Display the Interior Dimensions of Empty Display Cases
When replacing a display case, many customers compare cases based on their external dimensions.
However, even if two cases have the same external size, the usable interior space can vary significantly depending on factors such as the height of the base, the presence of a mounting platform, and the internal construction.
For this reason, when selecting a display case, it is important to compare not only the external dimensions but also the interior dimensions, which represent the actual space available for displaying your item.
To help you compare your existing doll or display with our cases, our size chart includes the interior dimensions of each display case. When choosing a case, we recommend using these interior dimensions as your reference.
Custom-Made Doll Cases
- Fully custom sizes are available, with width, depth, and height all adjustable (top-cover type only).
- Some models allow customization of the finish color, as well as changes to the background panel such as glass or mirror.
- There are also types where the base size and shape are fixed, and only the height can be specified (top-cover type only).
- Custom-made cases with doors are not available.
- Fully custom production takes approximately one month. Please contact us with sufficient lead time.
Shipping Unassembled (Optional)
Orders are normally shipped fully assembled in their original packaging.
If you prefer the item to be shipped unassembled, please contact us before placing your order.
We will confirm whether your selected product can be shipped in this way and advise accordingly.
Our display cases are delivered as completed products, but depending on the product, we can send it to you in an unassembled state. This page is for reference in that case.
How to assemble a wooden doll case: Type 1 with front door and tassels. (Please prepare your own wood glue.)
FIG. 1

- 1. Pour glue into the hole in the base until it is about half full, as shown in Figure 2 (commercially available wood glue will do).

- 2. Place the pillars on the base. There are three types of pillars, some with tops and bottoms, so be careful not to mix them up. (Fig. 3, 4) Fig. 4 shows the shape of the pillars for a case with tassels.
- 3. Insert the back panel and glass. (Fig. 5)

- 4. Apply glue to the recessed part of the top board in the same way as the base, and lightly insert the heads of the pillars. When doing so, be careful not to insert the pillar on the front right so that the door pin can be inserted later. (Fig. 6, 7)

- 5. While inserting the pin part of the right door into the hole in the base and the hole in the top plate, insert the pillar all the way into the recess in the top plate. (Fig. 9)
- 6. Press down on the top plate that was lightly inserted in step 4 with your hand from directly above and insert it all the way. If the pillar is not properly inserted in the hole and the bag and glass are not properly inserted in the groove, it will not go all the way. Please be careful.
- 7. If there are tassels, attach them.
