Japanese Doll Cases: Types, Materials and Size Guide

Japanese doll display case
Japanese doll cases from Juho Tougei

Juho Tougei sells individual display cases for dolls and seasonal decorations through our online store, with delivery available throughout Japan.

A doll case not only protects the display but also improves its overall appearance and helps create a more refined presentation. We offer cases in a variety of sizes and specifications to suit different displays.

Cases are available for Hina dolls, Gogatsu displays, Hagoita, Hamayumi and other Japanese seasonal decorations.

This page introduces the main types of doll cases, their characteristics and the key points to consider when choosing one. It is a useful guide for customers who would like to understand the differences before viewing our product collections.

The Main Functions of a Doll Case

A doll case serves several important purposes:

  • Protecting dolls and decorations from dust and dirt
  • Creating a clean and well-organized presentation
  • Making the display easier to arrange within the available space
  • Helping protect valuable dolls and accessories

Unlike a display stand or folding screen, a case protects the items while also bringing the entire arrangement together and giving it a more complete appearance.

Differences Between Case Materials

Acrylic Cases

Acrylic doll case without front pillars

Acrylic cases are lightweight, easy to handle and resistant to breakage. They are relatively easy to move and store, making them a practical choice for households with small children or pets.

However, acrylic can attract dust because of static electricity and may develop fine scratches if wiped with a dry cloth. Acrylic is a convenient option for customers who prioritize light weight and ease of handling.

Glass Cases

Glass doll case with front pillars

Glass cases offer excellent clarity and allow the display to be viewed beautifully. Their surfaces are comparatively resistant to scratches, making it easier to maintain a clean appearance over time.

Glass is heavier than acrylic and must be handled carefully when moved. It is often selected by customers who value clarity, visual elegance and a refined traditional appearance.

Differences Between Case Shapes

Rectangular Cases

Rectangular six-sided glass doll case

Rectangular cases are the most standard and versatile option. They are suitable for Hina dolls, Gogatsu displays, Hagoita, Hamayumi and many other decorations. Because they are available in a wide range of sizes, they are a useful starting point if you are unsure which shape to choose.

Hexagonal Cases

Hexagonal doll case with a mirrored back

Hexagonal cases create a distinctive appearance when viewed from the front. Their mirrored backs also make them suitable for displaying items with details that you would like to show from behind.

Because of their unusual shape, please check the dimensions carefully before purchasing. The number of available designs and sizes is also more limited than for rectangular cases.

Round Cases

Round acrylic doll case

Round cases create a gentle, contemporary impression. They are often chosen for compact displays or for arrangements intended to blend naturally into modern interiors.

Because of their unusual shape, please check the dimensions carefully. The selection of available designs and sizes is more limited than for rectangular cases.

Differences Between Case Structures

In addition to its shape, the structure of a case significantly affects how it is handled. Choose a structure suited to the installation location and the way you intend to arrange the display.

Top-Cover Cases

How a top-cover doll case opens

A top-cover case is placed over the display from above. After arranging the dolls and accessories on the base, the upper part of the case is lowered over the entire display.

This simple structure creates a clean appearance, but sufficient space is required to lift the case. The entire upper section must also be removed whenever items are added, removed or adjusted.

Cases with Doors

How a doll case with doors opens

These cases have doors on the front or side, allowing the decorations to be added, removed or adjusted without moving the entire case.

Space is required for the doors to open, but this structure is especially convenient for large cases or displays that are difficult to move after installation.

Choosing the Right Case Size

When choosing a case for Hina dolls or Gogatsu displays, consider the dimensions of the entire arrangement—not only the dolls, but also the display stand, folding screen, bows and swords, lanterns, flowers and other accessories.

Including every accessory may require a much larger case and make the display difficult to fit in the intended space. By taking a less-is-more approach and intentionally leaving out some accessories, you can create a well-balanced arrangement with open space that allows the dolls to stand out, while keeping the case at a practical size.

Also, because the width of the bottom frame reduces the usable interior space, choose a case with some extra room around the display.

Consultation on Combinations and Case Selection

Doll cases are not fixed to specific display types. The overall appearance and required size can vary greatly depending on the combination.

Rather than trying to include everything, adjusting the composition allows for a more balanced display suited to your available space.

At our store, we mainly offer empty cases and provide guidance on selecting a suitable case to match your existing display.

Depending on the case type, you can also view examples of actual arrangements using the same case.

If you are unsure about size or combinations, please feel free to contact us.

Why We Display the Interior Dimensions of Empty Display Cases

When replacing a display case, many customers compare cases based on their external dimensions.

However, even if two cases have the same external size, the usable interior space can vary significantly depending on factors such as the height of the base, the presence of a mounting platform, and the internal construction.

For this reason, when selecting a display case, it is important to compare not only the external dimensions but also the interior dimensions, which represent the actual space available for displaying your item.

To help you compare your existing doll or display with our cases, our size chart includes the interior dimensions of each display case. When choosing a case, we recommend using these interior dimensions as your reference.

Custom-Made Doll Cases

  • Fully custom sizes are available, with width, depth, and height all adjustable (top-cover type only).
  • Some models allow customization of the finish color, as well as changes to the background panel such as glass or mirror.
  • There are also types where the base size and shape are fixed, and only the height can be specified (top-cover type only).
  • Custom-made cases with doors are not available.
  • Fully custom production takes approximately one month. Please contact us with sufficient lead time.

Shipping Unassembled (Optional)

Orders are normally shipped fully assembled in their original packaging.

If you prefer the item to be shipped unassembled, please contact us before placing your order.

We will confirm whether your selected product can be shipped in this way and advise accordingly.

Our display cases are delivered as completed products, but depending on the product, we can send it to you in an unassembled state. This page is for reference in that case.
