• Hishida Shunsō (1874–1911) was a Japanese painter from Nagano who studied under Okakura Tenshin and co-founded the Japan Art Institute with Yokoyama Taikan. He pioneered the mōrōtai style, suppressing outlines and using mist-like shading, bringing innovation to modern Japanese painting. His major works include Fallen Leaves and Black Cat. Though he died at the young age of 36, his approach had a lasting influence on later generations.
