Hishida Shunsō

Hishida Shunsō (1874–1911) was a Japanese painter from Nagano who studied under Okakura Tenshin and co-founded the Japan Art Institute with Yokoyama Taikan. He pioneered the mōrōtai style, suppressing outlines and using mist-like shading, bringing innovation to modern Japanese painting. His major works include Fallen Leaves and Black Cat. Though he died at the young age of 36, his approach had a lasting influence on later generations.

Kuroki Neko (Black Cat)

Hishida Shunsō’s Kuroki Neko, painted in 1910, is one of the representative works of his final years. It depicts a black cat resting quietly on the branch of an oak tree. The contrast between the golden autumn leaves and the cat’s lustrous black fur is striking, while its penetrating gaze conveys both tension and vitality within the stillness.

The bold use of empty space and the softly rendered forms with subdued outlines reflect the modern style of Japanese painting that Shunsō pursued.
