Maruyama Ōkyo

Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795) was a painter active in Kyoto during the mid-Edo period and is known as the founder of the Maruyama school. He emphasized shasei, the careful observation and depiction of actual subjects, portraying animals, plants, and landscapes with naturalness and vitality.

His distinctive style combined the traditional beauty of Japanese painting with Western techniques such as perspective and shading. His representative works include Pine Trees in Snow, and he had a profound influence on later generations of painters in Kyoto.

Torazu (Tiger)

Maruyama Ōkyo’s Torazu depicts a tiger poised on a rock, gazing sharply upward. Its large, rounded eyes, firmly planted legs, and soft fur are rendered with great care, giving the powerful animal an unexpectedly approachable expression.

As living tigers could not be seen in Japan at the time, Ōkyo is believed to have studied imported tiger skins and the appearance of familiar domestic cats. The work reflects his emphasis on close observation, giving the tiger a strong sense of volume and vitality. Traditionally, the tiger has been admired as an auspicious symbol of courage, dignity, and protection from misfortune.
