Sakai Hōitsu

Sakai Hōitsu (1761–1828) was a leading Japanese painter of the late Edo period who established the Edo Rinpa school. Building on the artistic tradition of Ogata Kōrin, he added greater naturalism and refined Edo sensibility to Rinpa’s decorative style.

His work is characterized by vivid colors, softly blended ink and pigments created through the tarashikomi technique, and compositions that make effective use of empty space. He portrayed the flowers, plants, and birds of the four seasons with elegance and poetic sensitivity.

Kaki ni Shōkin-zu (Persimmon and White-eyes)

Sakai Hōitsu’s Kaki ni Shōkin-zu is an autumn flower-and-bird painting depicting ripe red persimmons and three Japanese white-eyes nestled together on a branch. Bright fruits are scattered among branches beginning to shed their leaves, while the closely gathered birds evoke the quiet atmosphere of deepening autumn.

The persimmons are rendered simply in vivid colors, while the trunk and leaves display the soft blending of ink and pigments produced by the tarashikomi technique. The rhythmic arrangement of curving branches, red fruits, and small birds reflects the decorative beauty of Rinpa and Hōitsu’s delicate, poetic style.

Painted in 1823, this work represents October in the Birds and Flowers of the Twelve Months series and is held by the Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shōzōkan.
