Sakai Hōitsu

Sakai Hōitsu (1761–1828) was a leading Japanese painter of the late Edo period who established the Edo Rinpa school. Building on the artistic tradition of Ogata Kōrin, he added greater naturalism and refined Edo sensibility to Rinpa’s decorative style.

His work is characterized by vivid colors, softly blended ink and pigments created through the tarashikomi technique, and compositions that make effective use of empty space. He portrayed the flowers, plants, and birds of the four seasons with elegance and poetic sensitivity.

Ashi ni Shirasagi-zu (White Egrets among Reeds)

Sakai Hōitsu’s Ashi ni Shirasagi-zu depicts a white egret standing at the water’s edge and another descending from above, surrounded by withering reeds and small chrysanthemums. The pure white plumage harmonizes with the subdued colors of the plants, evoking the quiet atmosphere of a waterside scene in late autumn.

The slender, curving reeds and the two egrets arranged vertically give the composition a sense of light movement and spaciousness. The softly blended ink and colors of the foliage, generous use of empty space, and delicate expression of the season reflect the decorative beauty of Rinpa and Hōitsu’s elegant, poetic style.

Painted in 1823, this work represents November in the Birds and Flowers Through the Twelve Months series and is held by the Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shōzōkan.
