• Uemura Shōen (1875–1949) was a Japanese painter active from the Meiji to Showa periods, and a leading figure in the field of bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women). Born in Kyoto, he continued to paint pure and elegant female figures based on the Shijō school style. His representative works, Introductory Dance and Mother and Child, delicately express women's inner thoughts and emotions. He established a solid position in the male-dominated art world, and in 1948 he became the first woman to receive the Order of Culture. His style, which embodies truth, goodness and beauty, continues to fascinate many people today.
